5 Days in Rajasthan: A Jaipur, Jodhpur and Udaipur Itinerary That Actually Works

Five days is not much time for Rajasthan, but it is enough to see three very different cities: pink Jaipur, blue Jodhpur and lake-side Udaipur. The trick is to accept long drives on two of the days and plan good stops along the way. This is the route our drivers know best.

Day 1: Jaipur city tour

Start at Amer Fort early, before the tour buses arrive. Then come back towards the city for a photo stop at Jal Mahal, followed by City Palace and Jantar Mantar, which are next to each other. Hawa Mahal looks best from the cafés across the road, not from the street.

In the evening, go up to Nahargarh for the sunset view over the city, then shop at Johari Bazaar or Bapu Bazaar.

Day 2: Jaipur to Jodhpur via Pushkar

This is a long day, around 350 km and six hours of driving without stops. Break the journey at Pushkar for the Brahma Temple and a walk to the ghats. Lunch in Pushkar, then continue to Jodhpur and reach by evening.

Day 3: Jodhpur to Udaipur via Ranakpur

Spend the morning at Mehrangarh Fort, one of the most impressive forts in India, and Jaswant Thada next to it. Then drive towards Udaipur, around 290 km.

Stop at Ranakpur on the way. The Jain temple there is carved in white marble and is famous for its hundreds of pillars, no two alike. It is closed to non-Jain visitors in the morning, so plan to reach around midday. Shoulders and knees should be covered.

Day 4: Udaipur sightseeing

Start at the City Palace, then take a boat on Lake Pichola for a close look at Jag Mandir. In the afternoon, see Saheliyon ki Bari and Fateh Sagar Lake. End the day with sunset at one of the lake-facing rooftops near Gangaur Ghat.

Day 5: Departure

Udaipur has a good airport and train connections. If you need to return to Jaipur by road instead, leave early; it is a full day’s drive.

Tips for doing this route by road

  • October to March is the best season. April to June is very hot for fort walks.
  • Book a private vehicle with the same driver for all five days. It saves a lot of time compared with changing taxis in each city.
  • Keep cash for monument tickets, parking and small purchases on highways.
  • If you have one extra day, add Chittorgarh or Kumbhalgarh between Udaipur and the return.
