Jaipur to Pushkar Trip: Brahma Temple, Ghats and the Camel Fair
Pushkar is one of those places that feels slower the moment you arrive. The lake, the evening aarti, the narrow lanes full of rose sellers and chai stalls. It is also an easy trip from Jaipur, which is why it is one of the routes we drive most often.
Jaipur to Pushkar distance and travel time
Pushkar is about 150 km from Jaipur. On the Ajmer highway the drive takes around three hours, including a tea stop. Ajmer comes first; Pushkar is a short drive beyond it, across the Nag Pahar hills.
A day trip is possible, but you would miss the evening aarti at the ghats, which is the best part of Pushkar. We usually suggest at least one night.
Places to see in Pushkar
Brahma Temple
This is one of the very few temples in India dedicated to Lord Brahma, and the main reason many pilgrims come. Phones and cameras are not allowed inside, so leave them in the vehicle or at the counter.
Pushkar Sarovar and the ghats
The holy lake is surrounded by dozens of ghats. Sunset and the aarti that follows are worth planning your day around. Be polite but firm with anyone offering an unplanned puja; you can decline.
Savitri Mata Temple
Savitri Mata Temple sits on top of Ratnagiri hill. You can climb the steps, which takes a while, or take the ropeway. Go in the morning; the view of the town and lake from the top is the best in Pushkar.
Ajmer Sharif Dargah
Ajmer is only around 15 km from Pushkar, so most of our guests visit the Dargah of Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti on the same trip. Fridays and Urs are very crowded.
When is the Pushkar camel fair?
The Pushkar Mela is held in the Hindu month of Kartik, usually in October or November, ending on Kartik Purnima. Thousands of camels and livestock traders arrive, and the town fills with visitors from all over the world. Hotels get booked months in advance, so plan early if you want to see it.
Outside the fair, October to March is the most pleasant time to visit. Summer days are very hot.
Food and shopping
- Pushkar is a vegetarian town. Eggs and alcohol are not served near the ghats.
- Try malpua at the sweet shops near the main market.
- Rose products, silver jewellery and colourful textiles are good buys. Bargain gently.
Extend it into a longer Rajasthan tour
Pushkar fits naturally into a bigger route. Many guests combine Jaipur sightseeing with Pushkar over three or four days. Our Jaipur to Pushkar Tour Package includes Jaipur forts, Pushkar and Ajmer with a private vehicle and hotels.
